Name: Joseph Homes
Job title: Review team adviser
Experience: 12 years in independent financial advice.
What attracted you to the financial planning industry?
I have been in financial services since the day I left school. In fact, I was still planning my school “leavers do” when I started my trainee adviser role in Sevenoaks. The role had been posted to the news board in my school. I went for the interview and the rest is history.
My Dad worked in financial services and I was always interested in the stories he brought home from work.
In addition, I studied business and finance so I have always been working towards a career in financial services.
What do you like most about your job?
Few careers allow you to help people in the way that we get to. And we get to do it daily.
During the course of a review meeting, we will cover all areas of a client’s personal and financial circumstances. In doing so, I can provide an ongoing monitoring service which means they are looked after from the beginning of their journey with Fingerprint, right from the way through.
This could be helping with a mortgage that has come to the end of a fixed term or reviewing pension provisions to ensure they are on track to retire when they want to, and with the level of income we have planned for!
What does your day-to-day look like in the office? How do you help our clients?
I will generally have a client review meeting every day of the week (sometimes two a day).
First, I’ll prepare for the day’s reviews to make sure the client gets the most they can from the meeting. I want to be sure that I can answer any and every question they may have.
Then, after the meeting, I will update all of the files to ensure the client’s details are correct. If there are any action points from the meeting I will get onto these straight away. I find this works best as everything is fresh in my mind and the client gets the best service.
Can you give a stand-out example of a client that you have helped recently?
One of the outcomes of a recent client review meeting was that the client required a withdrawal from his pension urgently. This was to help with the cost of living, as well as a one-off emergency expense.
As soon as the meeting was over and I was back at my desk, I drafted the suitability letter and actioned the income withdrawal immediately. The letter and application forms arrived in the client’s inbox before he got home from the meeting.
It’s a small thing but the client reached out to say how pleased he was with the speed of my actions and that I had listened to every word of his concerns.
